There was a point in our recent past where food changed from fork to table to factory to table. Why did this happen? And why is it still happening?
Every now and then I’m going to “profile” a food-like substance that some people continue to consume even though it bears little resemblance to actual food. Today’s feature is Dream Whip, a non-dairy, dessert topping mix. It isn’t whipped cream, but it sure looks like it on the box. It’s a dry powder and has a shelf life of probably a million years. It’s non-dairy, until you add the milk to mix it. Dream Whip was developed in the late 1950’s and marketed as being “convenient,” for the housewife. But, is it food?
Ingredients: SUGAR, HYDROGENATED COCONUT AND PALM KERNEL OILS, MODIFIED MILK INGREDIENTS, CORN SYRUP SOLIDS, MODIFIED CORNSTARCH, PROPYLENE GLYCOL, MONOSTEARATE, ARTIFICIAL AND NATURAL FLAVOURS, METHYLCELLULOSE, ACETYLATED MONOGLYCERIDES, MONO- AND DIGLYCERIDES, CELLULOSE GEL, CELLULOSE GUM, SODIUM SILICOALUMINATE, COLOUR, (CONTAINS TARTRAZINE).
This is clearly NOT food, and more like a science experiment. I wouldn’t eat it.
Arc-En-Ciel/Rainbow Chips Ahoy
The question is, “are kids so bored in the 21st. century that chocolate chip cookies with brown chocolate chips, isn’t doing it for them, too last century?”

Cars are made in factories, so are planes, computers, and running shoes. Is it still food if it’s made in a factory, and do we want to eat it?
